Proclamation Day 15th March 2016

All school children, teachers and parents assembled at the front of the school to partake in this memorable event.

We sang Amhran na bhFiann and Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile.

Some children told us about the meaning of the songs, the story behind the Irish Flag, excerpts from the new Proclamations  created by each class and what the commemoration of the Proclamation meant for all of us. 

A number of children along with Mrs. Lawson raised our national Flag and we sang Amhran na bhFiann.

It was a very special event to commemorate the 1916 rising.

Our first day back to school September 2015 

Our New Extension

St. Saviour’s pupils go back to a new school!!

Tuesday 1^st of September was the first day back to school from the holidays. It was no ordinary start to a new school year in St. Saviour’s, it was the day we could all see our newly extended building, which we have been waiting for years for.  All the pupils were waiting outside eager to get in to see the new extension.

For the past year, 4^th, 5^th and 6^th classes had been working in a very small squishy prefab. They could hear all the diggers and drills outside which was very distracting. The children also had a restricted playground for ages. They had to move classrooms a lot as the builders had to work in lots of different places, when some of the building was finished 1^st 2^nd and 3^rd were very patient as they had to stay in the old building. The teachers and pupils are for waiting for the sports hall to be floored, but this soon will be done.

However, all the waiting has paid off when their three classrooms each with their own toilets were finished and looking so lovely.                                            By Jazmine

            

Senior Room Poems 

Big Silver Moon

The night is dark and quiet,

Lit by a big silver moon.

Reflecting in the dark pond .

The old lady trudges through the

Frosty field collecting twigs

For her cottage fire.

She shivers in the dark with her big purple cloak.

With only a lantern to light her way.

Owls hoot in the night

Flying over the old lady’s head.

She wanders into the blackened forest.

Searching for her old thatched cottage.

She suddenly stops and stares into the moonlight

Watching foxes hunt for food.

The old lady spots her warm cosy cottage

She shuffles into her house.

Stars glitter in the dark

Holding up the sky

Deer prance lightly over the logs

Calling to their friends,

Far away wolves howl at the big silver moon.

The Moon

The moon  gliding across the sky in her silver vale,

Leaving a silver trail

The moons silver light

Brightening the carpet of the grass like an ocean light

The moon she glides the sky greeting the clouds one by one

As they fly by

The moons vale shine

Over the water

Lighting it up like a star on earth

Soon the night will give birth to the sun and the day will come.

With a silver dove

The silvery ripples

 On a moonlit stream

Fill those fish’s eyes with a silvery gleam

Cross Country Relay Race September 2015 

Cross Country Relay Race

On the 21^st September 2015, St. Saviour’s N.S. classes from 3^rd to 6^th class were brought to the beautiful Avondale Forest Park to take part in the Cross Country Relay Races. Teams of four (boys and girls in separate races) had to run a very big and wet slippery track. The track was really a field. We left school at around 9:40, but the races didn’t start until 10:30. Some of the other schools there were Ashford N.S, St. Kevin’s Greystones and the Glebe Wicklow. Unfortunately, St. Saviour’s didn’t win any medals even though their teams were superb and the children worked well together, displaying great team spirit. Everyone there could tell they worked hard, as did the other schools.

Everyone headed back to school, at around 12.30, the children and teachers from all schools enjoyed the 2 hour event and went back to school, still chatting about the wonderful day they had had.

Report on Cross Country Race

On Monday 21^st September St. Saviour’s N.S. Rathdrum attended the schools Relay races at Avondale Forest Park. 3^rd to 6^th classes ran in the event. There are four children on a team and they entered seven teams. They left school at 9:45 and travelled by bus to Avondale. 3^rd and 4^th classes ran 250m and 5^th & 6^th class ran 500m each. Parents came to support along with the kids who didn’t race.

The races began at 10:30 with the first race 3^rd class girls followed by 3^rd class boys all the way up to 6^th class girls and boys. For the older classes it involves a lot of hanging around as they wait for their race to start but they all had a great time cheering on the other teams. Some of the schools that were running also were the Glebe N.S , St. Kevin’s, Ashford N.S And lots more.

Unfortunately St. Saviour’s didn’t win any medals as the standard is very high, but all the children who ran should be very proud of themselves as the race was quite tough and they ran really well and besides there is always next year.

Young Scientist's Exhibition 2016

On Friday 8th January, the 3rd-6th classes were delighted to travel to the Young Scientist's Exhibition in the RDS in Dublin. It was an amazing day where the children were awed with presentations and demonstrations. We had an action packed day with a presentation about aeronautical space, a visit with Titan the Robot, a 3D celestial voyage, the world of robots, an insight into the life of a mentalist with David Meade and visiting the wonderful exhibitions from the primary and secondary schools. It was an amazing inspiring day and hopefully we will be back next year exhibiting!

Science Week 2015

Julia Marzoni and Pat Lacey From Merck came in to speak with us. 

Today we were fortunate enough to have a presentation by Pat and Julia from MSD as part of our Science Week.

Julia spoke to us about the history of medicines, from natural remedies such as tree barks used in ancient times to modern pharmaceutical. She spoke about John Snow’s identification of cholera, of Louis Pasteur’s research in microbiology, and his chance discoveries of penicillin.

Pat discussed the operations of a modern pharmaceutical facility, like the M.S.D factory at Rathdrum. He compared the operation of the factory to bread making. I found this a great description very useful in helping me to understand exactly how the batches of tablets and medicines are made.

We were very fortunate to get to talk to Julia and Pat about the interesting jobs in science.

Science Week

On Monday 9^th of November 3^rd, 4^th, 5^th & 6^th had a speaker come in and talk to them about engineering. The lady’s name was Karen and she talked to us about engineering. Karen showed us videos about engineering, the video was about when you wake up to an alarm. Engineers have made and invented that you have toast for breakfast. Engineers have made the toaster eg Karen showed us pictures of when she worked in Jaguers Land Rover in England.

She showed us all the tests she did on the cars like the water test when she drove really fast in a car around a wet motorway and tested which tyres were best for that test. She did a really good job and I learned loads!

Ø  Being a Mechanical engineer means they work with cars and engines and robots or factory machines.

Ø  Engineers think a different way to normal people do.

Ø  Engineers are always thinking what they can do to make the world better.

Ø  You would have to be good at maths to be a engineer.

Ø  Some engineers work on making bridges and structural engineers.

Ø  It takes four years of study at college to be a mechanical engineer.

Engineers

On Wednesday Catríona came in to talk to us about engineers and what engineering is all about.

Basically what engineering is, is fixing problems in our homes or making things possible so hopefully in the future we could have hoverboards etc

Catríona is a software engineer so she works with computers. She does alot of coding with her work. Coding is basically telling the computer what to do and how to react in different situations.

*        Maths is an important subject if you won’t to be an engineer

*        Coding is telling a computer what to do

*        Engineers fix problems, they ask the questions.

*        Software engineers do lots of coding.

*        To be an engineer you have often to travel alot to work with different people

*        There are lots of types of engineers like civil engineers who design roads and bridges, mechanical engineer who make and design cars and robots, software engineers who programme computers and chemical engineers who work with materials.

What a Troubled World

Look at it this way the world may be ok at the moment but in 10, 20,  50 years what is it going to be like? Why don’t we look up from our everyday lives and actually see what we are doing to our lovely planet.

Just think about if a few million on earth put a real effort into this because not one person can do it alone, but as a united nation it is more than possible.

Just think if we stopped driving our cares and polluting the planet we could change the world into a better place.

Imagine a world with no starving people and polluted lakes and rivers with no big polluting chemicals. I know the world will never be a perfect place where the new born human baby will play with the adult lion but why not make it the best we can because a lot of people are happy at the moment.

Just think how much of a better place we could make it because a lot of people think going out an extra few miles in your car won’t hurt, but it will.

If we continue the way we’re going, we’re going to be over populated, rundown world with half of it impossible to live in due to global warming. The British and the Americans fought Germany for their future and ours. Now we need to fight for our future and our descendants future. We want to live a full life so make it happen, now.
