Charlesland Track and Field Event 9^th May 2017

On Tuesday the 9^th May the 3^rd, 4^th, 5^th and 6^th classes pupils travelled to Charlesland, Greystones to participate in the annual Track & Field event. It proved to be a great day all round, the pupils did fantastic and the weather was perfect. The teachers are very proud of the pupils who participated today.

Yesterday, Tuesday 9^th May,  3^rd to 6^th classes travelled by bus to Charlesland to compete in athletics. There was lots of different sports such as sprint, long distance, relay, long jump, high jump and tug o war. We all had great fun. As a team 6^th class girls won 1^st place in tug o War and there were some individual medals won as well. We were lucky it was such a nice sunny day. We all had great fun.

6^th class girls Tug o War team came first. I came second in the heat of sprints and 4^th in the second heat.

I was first to clear the high jump bar, we all had a great day.

Yesterday 3^rd, 4^th, 5^th and 6^th classes went to Charlesland. Our team cam efirst in the Tug o War. Grace, Isabel, Calantha, Laoise, Anna, Lily, Alannah-Bel, Tara, Nadia and myself. We had great fun.

Yesterday, I was very anxious, I liked all the events I took part in, I lost but it was fun, the important thing is to take part & have fun. It was cool, I played and I got no medal, but won some new friends.

Swimming Lessons 

Pupils from 3rd class to 6th class have just completed Swimming Lesson for this year, for 8 week the children have been swimming and the senior children did life saving lessons also.

Life-saving Group

For the last couple of weeks our class were doing lifesaving in the Coral Leisure Center in Arklow. It wasn’t easy at first as the strokes were very unusual such as side-stroke and inverted breast stroke. I soon got used to them though. 

It was so much fun throwing the rope out to your partner and pulling them in. It is especially fun when you`re the one being pulled in. But when you are being pulled in by hand with no rope it isn`t so fun because sometimes people accidentally held your head underwater. 

Our coaches name was Nicola. We left school at 12:30 and were back for about 2:30. We did our swimming lessons for 8 weeks and I learned so much. (I think the hardest thing was having no goggles)

Life Saving Group

On the 11^th of January our school started swimming.

We left school at 12:20. We travelled in the bus. We got to Coral Leisure and then we changed into our swim gear. The Senior classes and other strong swimmers did life saving. There were four groups. We did life saving with Nicola. The lesson lasted for 45 minutes. There were parents there to help and Miss Woodroofe and Mrs.Binions were there organising it all. 
We had lessons for 8 weeks and I feel I learnt a lot and have become a much more confident swimmer.

          Visit of Aengus

           Bio-Diversity

A scientist named Aengus came to our school to talk about Biodiversity. All classes from our school, 1-6 classes, came into  in the seniors [Mrs Lawson’s] room for this. 
Aengus was amazing at grabbing everyone’s attention. He told us that the biggest living creature ever was the big, blue whale, and that the smallest living creature is bacteria. He explained about all of the habitats & the life cycles in our environment. Later in the afternoon he brought 5th & 6th classes  on a walk to show us local habitats. He also had some displays which he passed around the class. We enjoyed his visit very much & learnt lots about Bio- Diversity.

Forest School September 2016 

5th & 6th classes went to Ballyteigue Wood to go out and learn all about surviving in the woods with the teacher Alec Dunne. We are going to go there every Friday for six weeks. First we walked up to the base where we all sit there and gather around for when we want for when we want to go somewhere else. We learnt how to know where North, East, South & West was by just using the sun. So in midday your shadow is north and in the morning your shadow is is east and and at sunset your shadow is West.

He told us NOT go around and just eat any berries you want because some berries are poisonous. He said that the redder the berry is the more poisinous it can be. Then we all went down the hill and he told us a little about the bark of a beech tree and that you'd recognise it by how the bark is silver. then we went down the woods a little bit more and saw lots of mushrooms. we saw a big hole and Mrs. Lawson predics that it was on of the bombs from World War 2. And Anita got very excited whe she found an edible mushroom and she was so kind that she gave it to Alec Dunne.

Then the amazing adventure soon came to an end and we had to say goodbye to the brillent teacher Alec. I am sure I can speak for everyone when I say I would LOVE to thank Mrs. Lawson and Alec Dunne and all the parents willing to drive us to the Woods. It was a great experience and I can't wait to see what adventure would be waiting for us next Friday.

Leson 1 Forest School 

For 6 weeks everyone in 5th & 6th clases get to go to Forest Schools. It is in Ballyteigue Wood. The teacher is called Alec Dunne. He showed us about the compass and we got to make a compass out of sticks and rocks. Then he told us about each season. we all ate wood sorrel and poped the sap bubbles. 

Then we went on a walk and looked at the mushrooms we looked at the fungi on the trees. then we walked back to the benches and packed up our bags and went back to school. When we got back to school the bell went and we went home.

                      The Sun

She sends her beams to the rippled lake,

Like the golden frosting on a sunlit cake.

She puts a gleam in the fish’s eye,

As it flows down the stream, bobbing on by.

She sends shafts of sunlight to the forest floor,

She puts her beams on the rabbit’s door.

She watches the children splashing on the golden beach,

She makes the water so blue and clear so 

You can see into the deeps

She makes the dog sleepy, as it lies on the grass,

And she casts shadows on the cat as it lies on a branch

Then towards the end of the day she hides  her face far away.

My First Day of School

My First Day of School,

I had the butterflies,

I remember my dad bringing me in ,

With my big tears brimming in my eyes,

I remember looking around at everybody,

And thinking everybody was looking at me,

I remember doing some work as I thought then,

And feeling so professional as I took out my glittery pens,

Before the day had come to an end 

I'd  made myself a couple of friends.

Cooking Soup in School

On the 20^th of October 2016 we made soup and scones in school. We used the vegetables we had grown in our school garden this year.

First we peeled and chopped the vegetables then we put butter in the pot and melted it. After a while one of the other groups started making scones. To make the scones we put cheese, flour, milk ,sugar, baking powder, egg ,butter and water into a bowl. In my group(Ava, Leah, Alannah-Bel and I. We kept on peeling vegetables while three other groups made the scones. When it was little break we went and had lunch. After break we did work until big break then we went back into the hall with the other classes and we drank the soup and ate some scones. This was a great learning experience and I hope we get opportunities like this again.

Our Autumn Poems 

Autumn

Autumn has taken over the forest,

There is a golden, crunchy carpet on the damp forest floor,

The little russet squirrel perched up on its branch,

Crunching on a small brown hazel nut,

Lots of mushrooms and fungi bursting forth,

Through the carpet of moist decaying leaves,

On the forest floor the anxious hedgehog,

Nervously makes it’s way 

Through the decomposing mountain of mess and fungus,

Enjoying  the misty morning.

The golden crisp leaves underneath your feet,

While the fungus lives at the base of the trees.

The colour palette of autumn has arrived,

So has the musky smell.

And the swirling, icy cold sun from northern lands.

The ivy now grasps onto the trees,

Hiding,against the breeze.

At night, owls hoot and crickets creak.

While the crescent moon and twinkling stars

Illuminate the forest floor.

The wind rustles the trees,

While the sun is hazy, as it stumbles and rises

On an autumn morning, in the woods.

Why does autumn leave a trace?

Of red , yellow and brown?

Why do the animals steal her precious fruits?

Is autumn playing a big game of hide and seek, with the animals?

Is autumn the queen of the forest, is that why she wears a fiery gold and red cloak?
